We, the students of Franciscan University of Steubenville, are requesting an immediate reevaluation of the university’s off-campus housing policy as it applies to rising juniors. Franciscan’s current restrictions are significantly stricter than those of comparable universities, and they create unnecessary hardship for students who are fully prepared for independent living. As students currently studying abroad in Austria, we have already demonstrated maturity, responsibility, and the ability to live in community. These qualities should qualify us for the opportunity to secure off-campus housing when we return.
The on-campus housing conditions available to us are neither sufficient nor appropriate. Many residence halls lack basic living standards such as proper air-conditioning, clean bathrooms, and consistent maintenance. Problems including black mold, overcrowding, and unsanitary shared spaces raise serious health and safety concerns. The quality of the on-campus food is also subpar, and many of us wish to have the freedom to cook our own meals so that we can maintain healthier eating habits. Furthermore, the current policy prevents us from living with the students we have formed lifelong friendships with during our time abroad in Austria, which disrupts the strong community bonds that the university encourages.
For these reasons, we respectfully request that the university amend its policy to allow juniors in good standing, including those who have completed a semester abroad, to live off campus without requiring exception-based appeals. Updating this policy would reduce pressure on the residence system, promote student health, and support the continuation of genuine community life. We look forward to your timely response and to a constructive dialogue on this matter.
